What to Look for When Hiring a Video Editor

A great editor makes ordinary footage sing. Here's how to spot one — and the mistakes that cost startups months.

The editor is where good footage becomes great content — or where it quietly dies. When you hire a video editor, technical software skill is just the entry ticket. Anyone can learn the tools. The differences that actually matter are taste, speed, and judgment, and those are much harder to screen for.

What actually matters

  • Taste — do their edits hold your attention, or just look busy with effects?
  • Pacing — can they cut for retention, keeping people watching, not just for a clean timeline?
  • Speed — startups need turnaround measured in days, not weeks.
  • Range — short-form hooks and longer-form storytelling are genuinely different skills.

Taste is the hard-to-fake one

You can teach software. You can't easily teach an instinct for what to cut, when to hold, and how to open a video so people don't scroll away. The best editors have watched thousands of hours of great content and internalized what works. Look at whether their edits make you feel something or keep you watching — that's taste, and it's the whole game.

How to test before you hire

Don't hire off a reel alone — reels are curated highlight tapes that show someone's best possible day. Give a short paid test edit with real footage and a real brief, ideally similar to what you'll actually need. How they handle ambiguity, feedback, and a deadline on that test tells you more than any showreel ever could.

A reel shows their best day. A test edit shows you their normal one.

The hidden cost of the wrong hire

A slow or off-taste editor doesn't just produce weaker videos — they become a bottleneck that stalls your entire content cadence. If every edit takes two weeks and three rounds of notes, your whole pipeline grinds to a halt. For a startup, reliability and speed often matter more than the last five percent of polish.
