Why Your Startup's Landing Page Video Isn't Converting

A hero video should lift conversions, not just look nice. Here's why yours might be doing the opposite.

You spent real money on a slick hero video and conversions didn't move — or dropped. It happens constantly. The problem usually isn't production quality. It's that the video was built to impress instead of to convert. Fixing landing page video conversion starts with being honest about what a visitor actually needs in their first five seconds on your page.

Common reasons it flops

  • It opens with a logo animation instead of the value — you spent the most important seconds on your brand, not their problem.
  • It's too long — visitors bounce before the point lands. Attention on a landing page is measured in seconds.
  • It talks about the company instead of the visitor's problem and outcome.
  • It has no clear next step when it ends, so even an interested viewer just closes the tab.

What a converting video actually does

The structure is simple, and simple is what converts. State the problem in the first line. Show the product solving it. Make the outcome obvious and specific. End with a single, clear call to action. That's the whole recipe. Clarity converts; cleverness usually just entertains.

  1. Name the problem in the first sentence — the visitor should think 'that's me.'
  2. Show the product doing the thing, fast.
  3. Make the after-state concrete: what does life look like once this is solved?
  4. Give one next step. Not three. One.
Your visitor is asking one question: 'will this fix my problem?' Answer it in the first five seconds.

Length is usually the culprit

Most underperforming hero videos are simply too long. A landing page visitor hasn't committed to watching anything — they're deciding whether to stay on the page at all. A tight 30-to-60-second video almost always outperforms a beautiful two-minute film, because most people never reach the two-minute mark.

Test, don't guess

You don't need to guess which fix matters. Try a shorter cut against your current one. Move the video above or below the fold. Swap the opening line. Small changes to the first few seconds often move conversion more than an entire reshoot would. Measure, keep the winner, repeat.
