In-House vs Agency: Which Content Team Is Right for You?
Hire internally or bring in an agency? Both work — for different situations. Here's how to decide.
Once content becomes a priority, every founder faces the same decision: build an in-house team or hire an agency. The in-house vs agency choice comes down to speed, cost, breadth of skill, and how much you actually want to manage. There's no universally right answer — but there's a right answer for your situation.
When in-house makes sense
- Content is core to your product or brand for the long term, not a phase.
- You have the budget for salaries plus gear, tools, and the overhead of managing people.
- You have someone senior who can actually direct and manage a creative team.
- You want deep, always-on knowledge of your product living inside the company.
When an agency makes sense
- You need output now, not in three months of recruiting and onboarding.
- You want a full skill set — strategy, filming, editing, design — without making five hires.
- You'd rather not manage a creative team day to day.
- You're still figuring out what works and want flexibility to change direction.
In-house gives you control. An agency gives you a full team on day one. Pick the constraint you can live with.
The real cost comparison
Founders often compare an agency retainer to a single salary and conclude the hire is cheaper. That's rarely the true comparison. One in-house generalist can't match the range of a team — you'd need an editor, a strategist, a shooter, and a designer to cover what a good agency does. Compare like for like, and the math usually looks different than the sticker price suggests.
The hybrid many startups land on
Plenty of teams start with an agency to move fast and prove the channel, then hire in-house once the playbook is clear and they know exactly what role to hire for. There's no rule that says you have to choose forever. Start with whatever unblocks you now, and revisit the decision once content is actually working.
If you want a full content team without the hiring cycle, that's what we are.
